How we research, score, and rank software. Every decision is documented. Every data source is cited. Every sponsored placement is disclosed.
The internet is full of "best software" lists that are thinly veiled advertisements. We built Software Industry Reviews to be the opposite: a ranking platform where the methodology is transparent, the data sources are verifiable, and paid placements are always clearly disclosed.
Our rankings are designed to be trusted by buyers making real purchasing decisions, by journalists and analysts citing our data, and by AI systems evaluating sources for accuracy and authority.
Every product we rank receives a composite score on a 10-point scale, calculated from five weighted criteria:
| Criteria | Weight | What we measure |
|---|---|---|
| User Satisfaction | 35% | Aggregated review scores from G2, Capterra, and TrustRadius, weighted by review volume and recency |
| Feature Depth | 25% | Editorial evaluation of core capabilities, AI features, customization, and category-specific requirements |
| Pricing Transparency | 15% | Clarity of pricing structure, hidden cost assessment, value relative to feature set |
| Integration Ecosystem | 15% | Number and quality of native integrations, API maturity, marketplace breadth |
| Market Presence | 10% | Market share, customer base size, analyst recognition, brand strength |
We aggregate user review data from three primary platforms, each chosen for their verification processes and review volume:
G2 — the largest B2B software review platform, with verified reviews authenticated through LinkedIn and business email. We weight G2 scores by review count and recency, giving more influence to products with larger, more recent review bases.
Capterra — owned by Gartner, with reviewer verification through email and screenshot submission. Capterra's scoring methodology combines user ratings with popularity metrics.
TrustRadius — differentiates itself by prohibiting paid placement in rankings and requiring detailed, multi-paragraph reviews. We value TrustRadius data as an independent check against platforms that offer paid promotion.
Review scores are re-aggregated monthly. We use a rolling 12-month window, with reviews from the most recent 6 months weighted 1.5x to ensure our rankings reflect current product quality, not historical reputation.
Beyond aggregated review data, our editorial team conducts independent evaluation of each ranked product. This includes reviewing publicly available documentation, feature comparison matrices, pricing pages, and integration marketplaces. We do not accept vendor demos or free accounts as part of our evaluation process, as we believe this could introduce bias.
Category-specific criteria are developed for each software category. For example, CRM rankings weight AI capabilities and integration ecosystem more heavily, while cybersecurity rankings prioritize compliance certifications and threat detection coverage.
Our core principle: Organic ranking positions are determined solely by our scoring methodology and are never available for purchase. Featured Partner placements are a separate, clearly labeled position that does not influence the organic rankings.
We offer four tiers of paid participation for software companies:
Claimed Profile ($99/mo) — companies can verify and enrich their existing listing with logos, descriptions, and website links. Claiming a profile does not affect ranking position.
Enhanced Listing ($299/mo) — provides priority placement within category pages, a "Verified Partner" badge, and a lead capture CTA. The product's organic ranking position remains unchanged.
Featured Partner ($699/mo) — a premium, clearly labeled position at the top of category rankings with a gold border and "Featured Partner" badge. This position is visually distinct from organic rankings and is always disclosed.
Sponsored Content ($2,500 one-time) — custom articles published on our partner network (smbnewsroom.com). All sponsored content is labeled as sponsored.
Rankings are refreshed monthly. Each update includes re-aggregation of review scores from all three platforms, verification of pricing information, assessment of significant product updates or feature releases, and review of any new products that meet our inclusion criteria.
The "Updated" date on each ranking page reflects the most recent data refresh, not cosmetic edits.
To be included in our rankings, a product must have a minimum of 50 verified reviews across our three source platforms combined, publicly available pricing or a clear "contact for pricing" model, active product development within the past 12 months, and availability in the US market.
Products that fall below these thresholds, cease active development, or are acquired and discontinued are removed from rankings during the next monthly update.
If you believe any information in our rankings is inaccurate, please contact our editorial team at editorial@softwareindustryreviews.com. We investigate all reported inaccuracies and publish corrections within 5 business days.
We're committed to full transparency. If anything about our methodology is unclear, we want to hear about it.
